Film Readers

What is a film reader?

A film reader is an individual who reads and interprets mammograms. Radiologists are healthcare members who can be considered “film readers.”

What are the different types of film readers mentioned within the mammography audit?

The mammography audit includes three types of film readers: 1) Initial Film Reader, 2) Second Film Reader, and 3) Third Film Reader.

What are the differences between the initial, second, and third film readers?

The difference between the initial, second, and third film readers is the order in which the individual interprets a mammogram series. The initial reader is the primary interpreter, the second reader is one the patient is referred to for another opinion on the series, and the third reader is one that may be brought on for a final opinion.

Who can be a film reader?

While radiologists are traditionally the "film readers" in mammography, the field is evolving. Recent studies have explored the potential of radiographers, or medical imaging technologists, as secondary film readers for screening mammograms. One study even found that, with proper training, radiographers were able to interpret screening mammograms on par with radiologist interpretation benchmarks, opening up new possibilities in the field.
