Interpretations
What is a mammogram interpretation?
An interpretation involves the findings discovered in a mammogram based on the interpreting physician’s opinion of the content in the images. The resulting interpretation can involve either benign or suspicious findings, but it cannot be decided 100% that an individual has breast cancer based on a mammographic imaging series alone.
What are some things that are looked for to provide an interpretation of a mammogram?
Some signs of abnormalities that physicians look for in mammography are (BreastCancer):
- asymmetries
- groups of calcifications
- areas that have increased density
- areas that have thickened skin
Who are the individuals qualified to interpret mammograms?
Radiologists are qualified to interpret mammograms. They are specialized physicians with an MD or DO degree and have completed a four-year residency in radiology.
Why are interpretation results important?
Mammogram interpretations are important because they allow for an individual to receive further testing and treatment if the radiologist believes that the imaging contains suspicious findings that may be indicative of cancer. It is also essential for facilities to keep a record of all interpretations made by their physicians so that they can receive the most accurate measures of their performance in their Mammography Medical Audits.
