Why does Mammologix utilize USPS First Class Mail when sending patient letters using its MailDrop service?
First Class Mail
For clients electing to use Mammologix's MailDrop service, all patient letters are sent via the United States Postal Service's First Class Mail delivery option, at a minimum. There are two primary reasons.
Security & Potential Penalties
U.S. Federal statutes make it illegal to open correspondence addressed to someone else. There are also statutes focusing on any mail wrongfully removed from Postal Service custody, such as if it is stolen from a Post Office, a letter carrier, or a mailbox. If someone opens mail that is not addressed to them with the intention of stealing what is inside, they are subject to consequences. A person who steals mail from Postal Service custody may be looking at as much as five years in prison.
Unable to Deliver as Addressed
Returned mail is inevitable. Treatment of First-Class Mail includes all pieces being forwarded if a permanent or temporary change of address can be determined based on the change of address on file with the USPS. Any piece determined to be undeliverable is returned with a reason for non-delivery. Each of these value-added services is provided by the UPSP at no charge.
This ensures if the patient has relocated between the last address provided to Mammologix and the time a letter is created, it will automatically be either forwarded to the patient's new address or returned to the client.
Bulk mail rates do not offer this premium service option.
